Romelia: WHAT IS THE MOST VALUABLE PIECE OF ADVICE YOU’VE BEEN GIVEN ABOUT WRITING?
Justin Douglas: Write what you feel and are most passionate about.
Romelia: HOW MANY HOURS A DAY DO YOU WRITE?
Justin Douglas: I don’t write everyday unless you count social media posts, comments, texts and emails. I only write creatively when I am working on a project such as an album, mixtape, song, poem or book. When I am working on those things I’m sure I write 2-4 hrs a day.
Romelia: WHEN YOU ARE WRITING AN EMOTIONAL OR DIFFICULT SCENE, HOW DO YOU SET THE MOOD?
Justin Douglas: My book was not difficult to write emotionally. I have written songs and poetry that were emotional. Those times I sit and think and put myself back in the moment that I am writing about so that the audience will be able to feel what I felt when they were going on.
Romelia: WHOM DO YOU TRUST FOR OBJECTIVE AND CONSTRUCTIVE CRITICISM OF YOUR WORK?
Justin Douglas: My fiance, and a few friends who have known me since my childhood, and teenage years.
Romelia: HOW DID YOU BECOME INVOLVED WITH THE SUBJECT OR THEME OF YOUR BOOK?
Justin Douglas: I began using social media to find dates back in 2001 on the website BlackPlanet.com. I have used various free social media sites ever since to find dates up until recently a year and a half ago when I found my fiance.
Romelia: WHY DID YOU CHOOSE TO WRITE IN YOUR PARTICULAR FIELD OR GENRE? IF YOU WRITE MORE THAN ONE, HOW DO YOU BALANCE THEM?
Justin Douglas: Since I no longer need the knowledge that I acquired on free online dating throughout the years I decided it was time to share it to help other men be successful with it.
Romelia: WHAT CULTURAL VALUE DO YOU SEE IN WRITING?
Justin Douglas: Writing is great because you get to express yourself, create your environment, and share experiences from your cultural perspective with others.
Romelia: HOW DOES YOUR BOOK RELATE TO YOUR SPIRITUAL PRACTICE OR OTHER LIFE PATH?
Justin Douglas: I am a Christian. I believe Christianity is a lifestyle not just a religion. Although I do not beat people over the head with it in my book, and anyone from any religion can benefit from my book I’m sure I am sharing my experiences from a Christian lens as to how you should approach women respectfully online to get the result you desire.
Romelia: WHAT WERE YOUR GOALS AND INTENTIONS IN THIS BOOK, AND HOW WELL DO YOU FEEL YOU ACHIEVED THEM?
Justin Douglas: I wanted to create a handbook that would help men find dates online that would ultimately lead to them meeting the woman of their dreams who is perfect for them like I have. I feel like I achieved that. Now I would like to get the book more exposure. So more men can benefit from it.
Romelia: CAN YOU SHARE SOME STORIES ABOUT PEOPLE YOU MET WHILE RESEARCHING THIS BOOK?
Justin Douglas: Those are all in the book. I don’t want to spoil it for the readers. I discuss various stories and experiences that I had in the world of free online dating via social media sites for 17 years of my life. I assure you they will be very educational and entertaining.
Romelia: WHAT ARE SOME OF THE REFERENCES THAT YOU USED WHILE RESEARCHING THIS BOOK?
Justin Douglas: Google, Facebook, Twitter, Youtube, Instagram, BlackPlanet, SnapChat.
Romelia: WHAT DO YOU THINK MOST CHARACTERIZES YOUR WRITING?
Justin Douglas: My ability to candidly tell stories about my experiences in an entertaining and educational manner.
Romelia: WHAT WAS THE HARDEST PART OF WRITING THIS BOOK?
Justin Douglas: Finding the time to write it. Although it only took me 6 months I was still teaching elementary music at the time. I was taking acting, singing, and modeling classes, and working on my last mixtape. There was a lot going on. I always have a full plate. But I did complete it.
Romelia: ARE THERE VOCABULARY WORDS OR CONCEPTS IN YOUR BOOK THAT MAY BE NEW TO READERS? DEFINE SOME OF THOSE.
Justin Douglas: I don’t think so.
Romelia: ARE THERE UNDERREPRESENTED GROUPS OR IDEAS FEATURED IN YOUR BOOK? IF SO, DISCUSS THEM.
Justin Douglas: I don’t think so.
Romelia: ARE THERE MISCONCEPTIONS THAT PEOPLE HAVE ABOUT YOUR BOOK? IF SO, EXPLAIN.
Justin Douglas: I’m not sure but I feel like women, and men who are not single think they can’t benefit from purchasing the book. Here is what I mean. If you are a woman or a married man or man in a relationship you can benefit from purchasing this book because I am sure you know some single men age 17 to Senior Citizen that you can give it to for a Christmas, Birthday, or Graduation gift. They will love you for it! When they meet that special someone you will know that you had a hand in helping them find true love!
Romelia: WHAT IS THE MOST IMPORTANT THING THAT PEOPLE DON’T KNOW ABOUT YOUR SUBJECT/GENRE, THAT THEY NEED TO KNOW?
Justin Douglas: You do not have to pay a monthly fee to online date. Online dating can be free. All of the women that are on those paid dating sites are on the major free social media sites. You just need my book to help you know how to connect with them.
Romelia: WHAT INSPIRES YOU?
Justin Douglas: The Holy Trinity, my dreams, and aspirations. As well as excellence in any field. Seeing someone do something in excellence and accomplish their goals inspires me to do the same.
Romelia: HOW DID YOU GET TO BE WHERE YOU ARE IN YOUR LIFE TODAY?
Justin Douglas: Hard work and a never quit attitude that was placed in me by my father from a young age. When I wanted to quite Tae Kwon Do when it got hard around purple belt he did not let me and made me stay in it until I got my black belt. That has always stuck with me. Never quit anything you start until you accomplish that goal.
Romelia: WHO ARE SOME OF YOUR FAVORITE AUTHORS THAT YOU FEEL WERE INFLUENTIAL IN YOUR WORK? WHAT IMPACT HAVE THEY HAD ON YOUR WRITING?
Justin Douglas: The authors in the Bible because I read it regularly such as Paul, Solomon, Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John. Walter Dean Myers because I loved reading his books when I was a child. Also Grant Cardone because I was reading 10X rule while I was writing my book so I’m sure some of his style influenced me.
Romelia: WHAT DID YOU FIND MOST USEFUL IN LEARNING TO WRITE? WHAT WAS LEAST USEFUL OR MOST DESTRUCTIVE?
Justin Douglas: When I was in school I enjoyed it whenever we wrote stories and poetry. I never enjoyed writing papers about stories we read in English class text books or term papers in college.
Romelia: ARE YOU A FULL-TIME OR PART-TIME WRITER? HOW DOES THAT AFFECT YOUR WRITING?
Justin Douglas: Part time because I do so many other things. I’m an actor, Christian Rapper, and writer. I do flexible delivery work as well between gigs now. Now that I am no longer teaching full time it has opened up my schedule much more.
Romelia: WHAT ARE SOME DAY JOBS THAT YOU HAVE HELD? IF ANY OF THEM IMPACTED YOUR WRITING, SHARE AN EXAMPLE.
Justin Douglas: Most recently I was an Elementary music teacher, before that I was a high school Band Director, Before that I was a Security Officer, and before that I was a valet. Those jobs really did not impact my writing for this book although they did impact my writing for my musical projects.
Romelia: HOW DO YOU FEEL ABOUT EBOOKS VS PRINT BOOKS AND ALTERNATIVE VS CONVENTIONAL PUBLISHING?
Justin Douglas: I prefer print books personally. However I do not mind my publications being available in ebook format as well. My Book “The Power Of The DM” is available in both formats.
Romelia: WHAT DO YOU THINK IS THE FUTURE OF READING/WRITING?
Justin Douglas: I think the future is audio books and audio writing. Like we will talk what we want into a writing device and it will write it for us. Like how we talk into our cell phones and it writes it for us but it will work better than the phones.
Romelia: WHAT MAKES YOUR BOOK STAND OUT FROM THE CROWD?
Justin Douglas: When I had the idea to write my book I searched online to see if a book had been written like it before. A book teaching men how to properly approach women on free social media sites like Facebook, Youtube, Instagram, Twitter, and Snapchat. No one had written one. My book stands out because it is unique in that regard. It is relevant with the way a lot of people choose to find dates these days.
Romelia: DO YOU WRITE MORE BY LOGIC OR INTUITION, OR SOME COMBINATION OF THE TWO? SUMMARIZE YOUR WRITING PROCESS.
Justin Douglas: I write about what I know and have experienced.
Romelia: WHAT IS YOUR ROLE IN THE WRITING COMMUNITY?
Justin Douglas: To create content that is relevant and helpful to members of society.
Romelia: WHAT PROJECTS ARE YOU WORKING ON AT THE PRESENT? WHAT DO YOUR PLANS FOR FUTURE PROJECTS INCLUDE?
Justin Douglas: Currently I’ve been focusing mostly on my acting, and booking major roles. However my fiance and I are currently writing a movie together. So I am diving into the world of screenwriting. I plan to write my next album “Selah”. Both of these things will hopefully be done with the writing phase in 2021. I will eventually put out a poetry book as well, a book loosely based on my life, and 2 more self help books.
Romelia: describe yourself in a few sentences. Tell us something we do not know about you and something you hate about the world.
Justin Douglas: I am a multi talented individual who can do a lot of different things. Currently in life I am focusing on the acting side because I feel that will open up the doors and exposure for all of the other things I do such as my music and writing. I hate that racism is in the world. People are mistreated and killed because of something they cannot control the color of their skin. That is not acceptable, and has never sat right with me.
